Stanton Kent
Stanton Kent is a native New Jersey artist living all but 5 years in South Jersey.
Stan’s career as a Mechanical Engineer was very structured and organized with boundaries and limits always imposed. Creativity was controlled in many ways by the parameters of the job leading him to seek an outlet that would allow creativity to take him wherever it may lead.
In 1985 Stan acted on his fascination with glass and began creating works in stained glass. While mastering foil and lead techniques over the years, he became involved in restoration work. This allowed honing of skills and experience with different techniques of past artists. Still there was some restrictiveness to this form of glass in it’s two dimensional nature. Warm Glass was the answer and the fusing of glass allowed the use of the third dimension. . Its interplay with light and its transparent and opaque qualities were exciting. There was a fascination with layering colors of glass and seeing the expected results and unexpected surprises as they joined and mingled. Glass as a medium exhibits emotion through its transparency or translucence, and possesses reflective opaque qualities unlike any other substance. Combined with complimentary mixed media to enhance and present the finished glass the vision is complete.
Stan’s work currently involves three dimensional facial sculptures from glass. This process requires creating positive and negative molds, choosing and arranging the glass then firing in a kiln several times for the final piece. The glass piece is then mounted in a unique copper frame to create a layering of textures and colors that continually change thru out the day and night as it reacts with light.
“Watching someone enjoy the different aspects of your art, that touch them in some way, is the reason.”
